How to Plan Beach Maternity Photos in Orange County – Maternity Photographer Tips
When you think of Southern California, one of the first things that come to mind are our gorgeous beaches stretching from Santa Barbara down to San Diego. Having lived close to Orange County my whole life may make me slightly biased but I think OC beaches are breathtaking. From the ocean breeze that blows through our hair and the soft, glowing light that So Cal spoils us with, planning your beach maternity photos in Orange County is such a special way to celebrate this season of life while creating a dreamy and timeless way to document your pregnancy. If you’re wondering how to prepare for your maternity session, here’s some things you need to know to make the experience feel effortless, beautiful, and meaningful.
Choosing the Best Beach for Orange County Maternity Photos
Orange County is full of stunning beach locations, each offering a slightly different vibe. Laguna Beach is perfect for its coves and rocky, textured coastline. The cliffs give much more dimension to the beaches and add more variety in our photos than just sand and water can. Laguna Beach has a much more intimate and romantic feel and that’s why it has some of my favorite beaches to photograph at.
Laguna Beach does require a photography permit but I think it’s 100% worth it. We also have to keep an eye on the tides. Since most of Laguna’s beaches are coves, we completely lose the beach during high tide which make it impossible to photograph at. We are able to check tides 30 days before our session and don’t worry, I’m happy to discuss all of this with you and guide you through how to photograph our session in Laguna Beach.
A little further south of Laguna Beach is my second favorite beach to photograph at and that’s in Dana Point. I pay a yearly permit to photograph on this beach so it’s already covered and we’re good to go! High tide doesn’t affect this beach as intensely as in Laguna so this is a great plan B option if high tide puts a damper on our Laguna plans. It’s a stunning beach with cliffs and palm trees and really encompasses the beachy vibes that So Cal is so famously known for.
Choosing the right location ensures your photos reflect your vision while also creating an environment where you feel comfortable and in turn gives you photos that feel like you.
What to Wear for Beach Maternity Photos
Your outfit plays a huge role in how your photos look and feel. For beach maternity sessions, flowy dresses are always a favorite. They move beautifully with the ocean breeze and add softness and elegance to your images. Neutral tones like creams, soft pastels, and earthy shades photograph best against the coastal backdrop. These tones keep your images timeless and help highlight your growing bump without distractions.
If you’re aiming for a more casual look, open buttoned jeans and a cropped sweater or open top that shows off that growing baby bump works perfectly! This type of outfit is so fitting for the beach. For the partners, jeans and a nice shirt is easiest and also looks best. Avoid anything with logos or super stiff dress shirts. Most importantly, choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable. That feeling always shines through in your photos.
When to Schedule Your Maternity Session
Timing is everything when it comes to maternity photography. The best time to schedule your session is typically between 30–34 weeks. During this stage, your baby bump is beautifully visible, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience.
For beach sessions in Orange County, golden hour is ideal. This is the hour just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. Once the sun goes down, we enter into blue hour. It’s when we get more of the cooler, darker tones. I love getting variety in my sessions and to do so we start in that sun-kissed golden hour and end in that dreamy blue hour.
As much as we love sunlight for our sessions, don’t overlook overcast days. Cloudy skies can create a more emotional, intimate feel with soft, even lighting that many clients love. You can see an example of an overcast beach maternity session HERE.
Embracing Natural, Candid Moments
One suggestion I have for getting the most out of your maternity session is to breathe. I know it sounds silly but we are busy..we’re working, we have doctors appointments and schedules that are always jam packed. Your session is YOUR time to take that breath and enjoy without emails, phone distractions, rush hour traffic. The more you can slow down and focus on the connection between you and your partner or you and your baby, the more meaningful your photos will feel.
Walking along the shoreline, holding your bump, sharing quiet moments together—these are the moments that tell your story.
As a maternity photographer, I guide you gently while leaving space for genuine emotion to unfold naturally. That’s what creates images that feel authentic to you and this part of your story.
Planning for a Stress-Free Beach Session
Again, the best sessions happen when you feel relaxed and present. Plan to arrive a little early, bring comfortable shoes for walking to your location, bring snacks and water and trust the process. Beach sessions can be unpredictable with tides and weather, but that’s part of the experience. Every session is unique, and those natural elements often create the most stunning and memorable images.
